Slea Head Famine Cottages

Southwest Ireland | County Kerry

Slea Head Famine Cottages located on Dingle Peninsula in county Kerry are a memorial reminding the tragedy of Great Famine (Irish: an Gorta Mór) from the mid 19th century. The result of this tragedy was the death of a million people and the emigration of another million, reducing the Irish population by about 25%. The cottages are made up of main farmers cottage and number of smaller peasants cabins. The main cottage was built in the 1840's by local landlord, the Earl of Cork (the timber used for the roof comes from shipwreck). In 1880 an extra bedroom was added and main door was moved as well cowshed and stable were built. The rooms at the back of the house were built in 1910. There is also ancient beehive hut which probably was converted to pigsty. Around the cottages there is a small Animal Park where you can see animals such as Kerry Pony, Connemara Pony, Kerry Cows, Goats, Sheep and Donkeys.
